The best Regency Romance novels feature lively narrative witty dialogue and memorable characters which can make these books a true delight Unfortunately A Gentleman's Bidding by Jean Wilde falls short in these areas The narrative did not transcend the situation the dialogue was fairly formulaic and the characters were too flat The book could also benefit from additional editing to catch a number of grammatical mistakes and punctuation peccadilloesHowever for those who find Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer too tame Wilde's book is much much steamier In fact there is lots of explicit sex for readers who enjoy erotica

Irginity in London’s most elite and notorious brothelHeir to a baronetcy James Hughes has always taken his role seriously To secure his family’s position in society he knows he needs to marry well But when he finds himself by chance at an auction in the infamous Scarlet Salon he throws ambition to the wind t. I like good endings Being from Texas I like it when the hero rides off into the sunset his white hat firmly on his head with the pretty girl bouncing along behind him hanging on for dear life “A Gentleman’s Bidding” is like that but set in 19th century England It has a lot of twists and turns along the way designed to make the end possibly turn out different but thank goodness everything does get sorted out in the end There are steamy sex scenes thrown in to spice things up Meddling parents and supportive best friends for both main characters round out the cast along with a loan shark thrown in for intrigue and a touch of danger “A Gentleman’s Bidding” is both entertaining and instructive – instructive in the author’s description of the strict class structure in England which was slowly breaking down at this time in history and entertaining in the author’s use of colorful characters especially the young and beautiful Emily a woman willing to do anything to save her family from financial ruin She does I recommend “A Gentleman’s Bidding” for readers wanting light reading about interesting people in 19th century England B Duane Whitlow
