Shadow Twin Black Dog #3After everything she’s seen Natividad was sure Ezekiel could take care of himself Under any circumstances Against any enemy Whether he was temporarily exiled from Dimilioc or not Then the link between them forged when she absorbed a trace of Ezekiel’s shadow makes it clear she was The Yankees have just won their 15th of the past 16 games so maybe I'm not in the best frame of mind to review a book about power dynamics and neverending danger mood hysterical laughter no team can possibly be this good LOVE THIS TEAMNormally I wouldn't put this into a review but it too is part of my weekend and I have GR comments documenting Jeter's ankle giving out in the playoffs and I kind of like having that record? And I don't know that I'm going to be able to remember this book without also remembering the utter jubilation of this weekend in sportsBut this is a really well done book especially for a third in series that introduces new mythology and entirely new challenges I'll get the cons out of the way first that new mythology for starters How many new dangers can they face in the span of like three months? It might be overkill even though it is parceled out well And all these new dangers means sometimes I wonder at the back of my mind just how dangerous Ezekiel really is every single book has had him being overmatched It's a disconnect between the way he's treated and the situations in which he finds himself and while I think I'm supposed to be impressed he keeps surviving the plots also start to feel engineered to keep him from being invincible And that's a deliberation that reeks of authorial insertion especially when you consider what makes this series successful this really delicate emotional balance between humanity and animal instinct between individualism and choosing to submit to someone else's orders It's what makes the uiet moments so special Ezekiel with Natividad and especially in this one Ezekiel with Grayson The deliberation makes you wonder if Ezekiel and Grayson's strength isn't purposely being undercut and to me that would weaken the entire seriesI like this a lot There are good moments But I'm ever so slightly concerned about where the series is headingOne last note those text messages not good Very very bad in fact Too many ridiculous abbreviations too glib frankly too puzzling and too easy to skip right over them

WrongShe knows Ezekiel isn’t dead She knows he must have met an enemy he couldn’t defeat alone And she knows she has to rescue him no matter the costMiguel’s brother is a black dog and his sister is Pure but Miguel himself is only human That has its downsides for anyone living This felt a little bit like a middle book since it ended with some major threads still hanging but I liked getting to have time with Miguel I enjoyed the latest installment in the story and I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next and not totally sure I can put my finger on what felt off but not sure that this felt like a totally complete story on its own I'm very glad that we'll get Black Dog stories later this year
